The Founding of Great Lakes Alumni Club of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT)

On Sunday, Oct. 4, 1997, more than 20 HIT alumni and their family members gathered at Inkster, a suburb of Detroit, and announced the founding of the Great Lakes Club of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT or HaGongDa) Alumni Association. Great Lakes area includes Michigan, Illionis, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pensylvania and New York of USA and Ontario of Canada. It is the cradle of modern manufacturing industry and still is the powerhouse for economy growth. The traditional industries in this area such as automotive in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana and heavy machinery in Illinois, etc., provide abundant opportunities for professional engineers seeking technological challenges. For years, HIT graduates from all over the world came to this area to start their professonal life. Some of them are senior technical staff in big companies and some are playing important roles in smaller but more dynamic companies. There are also alumni who became entreprenuers. To promote and enhance ommunication between our alma mater and among alumni, Dr. Che, Chenggang of General Motors Corp. and Wang, Hua of Ford Motor Company called for the founding of this club over the internet, which was actively responded and lead to the founding of this club. The club will be run by coordinators chosen among members from different areas in turns. The purpose of this club is: 1. Establish and promote relationship and communication with HIT. Most members are profesional engineers fluent with modern CAD/CAE/CAM technologies which fit Harbin's long term need. They are able to and willing to provide HIT with such help. They can also be guides for visitors from Harbin. 2. Promote friendship among alumni. By exchanging information, HIT alumni and their family members can benifit mutually and advance professionally. It is also a place for members to help each other in daily life. Job seekers can also get first-hand information. 3. Establish connections with alumni associations of other schools.
